For many German men, fathers and sons Christmas time is a special time of the year. They have been waiting since months for this time, when they can build their model railway. Big wooden fiberboards are decorated with mountains and tunnels, barriers and crossings, train stations and German miniature sceneries. Perfect miniature copies of real trains run through model scenery.
These model railways have six to eight millions fans, who are mostly made by two big manufacturers, Märklin and Fleischmann. Model railways were and still are the most popular toys of German men.
In 1891 Märklin in the Swabia’s city of Gottingen introduced its first clockwork-running rail road model. In 1935 the company’s breakthrough came with the first electrical table railway. Models are made in proportion 1:87 to their real ancestor trains and move through miniature Alps or cross rivers and gulches. Since years digitized railways are available as well which whistle at button touch, steam and move computer controlled between railway stations and half-timbered small houses.
