Hamburg / Hamburg City20.06.2014A strange greating in Hamburg
Many people have heard about the typical Hamburg greeting „Hummel, hummel” on which traditionally “morse, morse“ is answered. It is written on cups, T-shirts, plates, glasses, stickers and a lot other souvenirs, since it is one of the most popular part of Hamburg souvenirs.
Though this exclamation has originated in Hamburg it actually is no greeting at all. Rather used as battle-cry of Hamburger locals the exclamation was introduced in 1854 by water carrier Johann Wilhelm Bentz who was known under the nickname of Hummel and counts today to the best known persons of Hamburg.
As the legend goes, water carrier Bentz was called by children the nickname „Hummel, hummel“ upon which he is said to always have answered „ Morse, morse“. The short form of „Klei di an'n Morse“ is said to have meant so much as „fuck off“.
Today however, the exclamation is used only by fans of different Hamburg sport teams at home plays.
