Lyoner is more than merely a speciality of Saarland. It is the brand name of this federal state! This fine sausage is said to have been originated in the French city of Lyon. It’s secret of taste is a special mixture of spices and a specific kind of smoking.
Eaten cold and warm, it is a firm component of Saarland’s kitchen and since 2006 even a protected brand. Lyoner resembles Fleischwurst (pork sausage), however is much more than that, because Lyoner contains lots of meat and only little fat. Mostly used as cold cuts for bread, Lyoner is also served grilled or roasted.
Hence, visitors should always buy as present the most typical product of the Saarland: a Lyoner! They are sold in every butcher's shop in Saarland.
