It were already the hand-sewed elephants, camels, monkeys and rabbits of the toys factory Margarete Steiff that did make kids’ eyes sparkling even before 1900. The day her nephew proposed to make a bear with movable limbs, the teddy bear was born. Since that day this soft little animal has its firm place in children’s hearts. Since generations toddlers don’t go to bed without it anymore. Although the plush zoo contains today over 2500 animals, the teddy bear has a place of honour among all his friends.
Where does the name come from? The first teddy bear, Bärle PB 55, was introduced at Leipzig toy fair in 1903. An American immediately bought 3,000 copies of it and became rich back home. On a hunting expedition no bear was spotted thus a baby bear was bound to a tree for US president Teddy Roosevelt to shoot. However, he did not have the heart to kill that little bear, thus he became name giver of these cosy friends.
