Bavaria20.02.2014Hops and malts, God exalts!
The Germans‘ second favoured drink is beer. It’s only sprinkling water that is consumed even more in Germany. Well, is there anybody who has not yet heard of the Hofbräuhaus in Munich? Or of the huge fair Oktoberfest where beer is sold in one litre glasses? Of Kölsch in Cologne or a chilly wheat beer? Beer is to Germany what red wine is to France.
For beer one should use a nice pitcher, because this keeps the beer cool insummer and protects it from unwanted insects, eg wasps are attracted by the smell.
Already as early as 800 B.C. the first German beer is said to have been brewed. Indeed, at that time without hop, this has been added around 1500 years later. Still today in Germany beer is brewed according to German purity requirements, a rule that was established in 1513: beer can contain only waters, hops, malt and yeast – nothing else.
Numerous monasteries were during past centuries pioneers of the brewing art. Today many of these breweries are still in place and working. Thus it is no wonder that Germany counted in 2012 a total of 1.319 breweries that were producing 5,000 different sorts of beer.
As rumour lately has it, beer seems to prevent arteriosclerosis. So let it be. Cheers!
TIP: On the 23rd of April Germany celebrates the day of beer. Maybe there is an interesting event just near your place too.
