Have you ever seen such a wonderful Christmas pyramid? Christmas pyramids go back to old Christmas traditions of the Middle Ages. During the 18th century they were manufactured in such a way that two sticks that were wrapped in green branches were tied together at the top and decorated with some lights. Both, dark branches and lights were supposed to turn away evil.
During pre-Christmas time these traditionally decoration from the Ore Mountains, the light carousels are used all over Germany. Made of wood, sometimes extremely filigree manufactured, they have the size of a coffee cup or are sometimes even as big as two story houses. But generally they are used as room decoration. The pyramids are mainly decorated with figures from biblical Christmas stories and, of course, angels. Some also show forest motives or everyday scenes.
The pyramids generally are quite differently designed, but one thing they all have in common: From the candles warmth climb up and puts a wheel in motion that turns the plate with the figures.
Is there something more atmospheric than the smell and sight of candle light? This popular Christmas pyramid has fast spread over the borders of Germany as an excellent souvenir for Germany-fans.
