Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are best known around the world for their eponymous collection of fairytales

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are best known around the world for their eponymous collection of fairytales. But they also bequeathed Germany a comprehensive collection of ‘German Legends’. In 1816 and 1818 they published two volumes of historical legends based on real people and historical places. Famous examples include ‘Cologne Cathedral’, ‘The Mouse Tower of Bingen, ‘The Pied Piper’ and ‘Doctor Luther at Wartburg Castle’.

The Rhine Legends Route

Legends come to life along the Legendary Rhine-Romantic Route, which runs for 586 kilometres and covers over 100 places of interest between Düsseldorf and Mainz. Travellers can visit a total of 48 locations that provided inspiration for the brothers’ stories. “The literary treasures of the Brothers Grimm are ideally suited for marketing German culture abroad. All of the 580 legends have links with German regions,” according to Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the GNTB.

Achievements of the Brothers Grimm

The two linguists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were not only interested in legends and fairytales but also in the German language, its historical development and in German grammar. Their most important work is their German dictionary. This reference book contains definitions of the different meanings of words as well as their etymology and sources. 2013 marks the 175th anniversary of when they began their work, but the brothers did not live to see its completion.
