Baden-Württemberg26.01.2014Pretzel – a sunny pastry
The inventor of the pretzel was very clever, even though not able to mind his tongue. He was a Swabian baker who had offended his count who in return, threatened to get him killed. However, the baker's wife asked the good-natured ruler for mercy, thus he gave the baker a chance to save his life. Within three days he should invent a tasty pastry through which the sun could shine three times.
For two days nothing came to his mind. On the third day his wife stood with crossed arms warningly in front of him. It was exactly then, that he had the perfect idea! He took dough, rolled a sausage and formed it like two intertwined arms. While examining his work he noticed that it had three openings through which the sun could shine. After baking his innovation he took it to the count. The count was very much excited and named this pastry Braze after the Latin word for little arms. The baker however was overjoyed and from this day on baked every morning a whole plate of Pretzels.
