The Sandman is a German children's programme of approximately 10 minutes duration which is produced since 1959. Between 1959 and 1989 sandman was produced and broadcasted by GDR’s German television radio (DFF) as well as by ARD in the Federal Republic of Germany under the title of Our Sandman. Since the German reunion, Sandman is produced by the former DFF, today called Broadcasting Company Berlin-Brandenburg. Watching this programme for many toddlers is a ritual before going to bed even today.
Sandman was produced by Sandmann Studio Trickfilm GmbH in movie park Babelsberg. Since autumn 2009, on occasion of its 50th birthday, an exhibition about sandman, its history and vehicles and other co-operating characters of the fairy tale wood can be seen in the film museum of Potsdam. In the movie park Babelsberg an exhibition about “Sandman – adventure in the dreamland”, the movie, opened in April 2010 and is still shown.
Since decades many merchandising products about and around the sandman are available, as for example dolls, a series of postcard or CDs.
