Lower Saxony / Metropolitan Region Hannover / Hannover27.06.2014The best known butter biscuit in Germany
The capital of Lower Saxony is home to the probably best known German biscuit. In 1891 came in Hannover “Leibniz Cakes" on the market. Still today the Leibniz butter biscuits are produced here. Company owner Hermann Bahlsen called his biscuit as common during those days, after a known personality, the famous scholar and Hanoverian court librarian Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
In 1893 the biscuit was even gilt: it won gold at the world exhibition in Chicago. According to the jury Leibniz Cakes was copied in similar form also under another name. However, the fine butter taste would exist only at Leibniz.
Today Leibniz biscuits are produced in five Bahlsen-production sites in Germany and exported to more than 80 countries.
