Bavaria15.01.2014Small, colourful, adorable, kitschy – beloved or smiled at
Already in Baroque times, during the 17th century the first marble garden dwarfs decorated castle and palaces’ gardens. In 1847 the first garden gnomes were introduced to the United Kingdom by Sir Charles Isham, who brought 21 of these small figures in terracotta style with him from a Germany trip for decorating his garden.
Today there are approximately 25 million of these garden gnomes standing in Germany’s gardens. Of course nowadays they are made of plastic instead of marble. Many kinds of different garden gnomes can be seen: pipe smoking ones, those with a pickaxe on their shoulders, dwarfs pushing a wheelbarrow and even those holding a lantern.
A kind of revival of the garden dwarf took place during the 90s when quite unusual copies were sold. Garden gnomes with a knife in the back, those giving the finger and even imitating politicians lined shelves in many shops. Imagination had no limits. Look forward to getting your favoured copy!
