Berlin / Berlin City Center06.05.2014The Berlin Bear is the heraldic symbol of Berlin since 1280.
At many places you can see the bear, full-sized, coloured or as a souvenir in shop windows. This bear is closely connected to its city.
The motive of a bear can also be seen on so-called "milestones" which indicate the way to Berlin and distance to the former Dönhoffplatz. At Berlin’s Leipzig Street for instance rises a copy of the Prussian "zero milestone" dating back to 1730, that stands here since 1979. In 1957 a bear's plastic was even placed on the middle strip of today's highway A115 near Dreilinden. Furthermore, the bear was inspiration to the bear statuette that is given at the Film Festival Awards.
In the official quarterly leaflet of the Association of Friends of the Berlin Bear stories and news about Berlin milestones and their history as well as anecdotes about real bears living in Berlin are published. The list of these milestones is long. Especially since special attention is drawn on earlier dismantled and now recovered "milestones".
Before 2010 only some of these small monuments were known. But until 2013 over 250 locations were recovered. The origin and meaning of these stones is explicitly presented on the homepage of the Initiative of Conservation of Berlin milestones.
