The region of Dresden clasps the area from Riesa in the northwest to Sebnitz at the Czech border in the southeast of Dresden. With more than 1.14 million inhabitants (that is 28 percent of the Saxon population) and about 4,200 square kilometres in terms of surface the region is of great importance to the Free State of Saxony. Against the general trend in Eastern Germany more and more people move to this ambitious region.

Economy booms in the east of the republic

Dresden is responsible for over a third of Saxony’s gross domestic product (GDP). GDP growth rates are higher than those of Saxony, new federal states and Germany all together! Further, this region is an important location for microelectronics in Europe. 1,500 enterprises employ a total of 48,000 employees. Since the second AMD plant opened the region belongs to the worldwide most important TOP 5 semiconductor locations. 36 percent of Saxony‘s overall industrial turnovers are made here.

Most important university location in the new federal states

About 47,000 young people study at the university, five colleges, four advanced technical colleges as well as three occupational academies. Thus, the surrounding of Dresden is a most important research and science location in the new federal states. Twelve Fraunhofer institutions, five institutions of Leibniz-science community as well as three Max-Planck's institutes are settled here.

... and finally, the region is a crowd-puller:

About 9.8 million tourists visit Dresden per year. This makes the city of Dresden ranking on place seven on the list of the most popular German city travel destinations.
