Since 800 years Stolpen castle, the castle of the bishops of Meissen and Saxon electors rises above the country.

This bulwark is not only famous for being built of basalt and having outlasted centuries. Its actual  fame attained the castle by being exile of countess Cosel. She was said to be beautiful and intelligent, but disowned by Saxony's prince and Poland's king August the Strong when she interfered too much in matters of state. From 1716 to 1765 she lived in this castle, until she passed away being 84 years old.

Four castle courts, fortress works, grain house with main guardhouse, chamber of torture, towers, dungeons, hole of hunger and a lot more vividly show visitors the world of the Middle Ages. Children rejoice at the thought of the ghost that is said to haunt the castle.
