Probably the most popular town for international tourists
Millions of tourists annually visit the medieval city of Rothenburg to admire its old town as well as its castle, which has been built during the 12th century. A walk-through town wall entirely encloses the city centre and turns an excursion into an outstanding experience.
There are many places of interest in the historical town area: The marketplace with the city hall and the councillor's drinking room with the carillon "Meistertrunk". There is the Klingentor, a tower literally called blade gate, which was built 1380 to 1390 and from where drinking water distribution was managed. In the Dominican monastery built in 1258 nuns used to live in who dedicated their life to the poor. The bastion, established at the end of the 15th century, comprises of many historical buildings as well as the church of Saint Wolfsgang.
TIP: Visit the criminal museum which is accommodated in the former monastery building of the Maltese Knight's order. There you can see medieval instruments of torture and criminal execution. Also Witch's pursuit is exhibited quite figuratively.
