Spruce Mountains is an ancient low mountain range, which millions of years ago have been pushed by enormous natural forces into the shape of a horseshoe. In Central Franconia lies the so-called Franconian sea area which has a water surface area of about 2,000 hectares when reservoirs are taken into account. The area comprises the great and small Brombach Lakes with adjoining Igelsbach Lake, Roth Lake and Altmühl Lake. This area is quite untouched and is characterized by mixed forest, fields and meadows.
