Climatic Spa – and mining town
Well-known as a mining town in the middle ages, Bodenmais was awarded the title „climatic spa“ in 1945, adding a spa center (1967) and later on also a spa park.
Being mentioned officially for the first time in 1300 under the name of „Pabenmaiz“, the story of this town starts rather humble as a place where people mined for silver. In 1522 Bodenmais was granted town rights. Starting in the 15th century, glass manufactures were founded in and around Bodenmais, and after WW2 Bodenmais emerged as a center for glass conditioning. Lead crystal products are among the souvenirs visitors of Bodenmais like to buy.
Having come to Bodenmais you should visit the Catholic Parochial Church built in 1805 in the middle of the market square. People interested in the history of mining should visit the “Historische Besucherbergwerk” (Historical Mine for Visitors) at the Silberberg. This museum was founded in 1962. Another place of interest are the glassblowing facilities, of which the “Joska-Glasbläserei” is the best-known.
