Land of castles, palaces and the world-famous Loreley
The federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate is home to around 4 million people and situated in the southwest of Germany. It was founded in 1946 and borders France, Luxembourg and Belgium. Rhineland-Palatinate is not only the biggest federal state on the left side of the Rhine in terms of surface but also one of the richest in terms of forests.
The region is characterized by low mountain ranges of the Hunsrück, Eifel, Westerwald and Pfälzer woods. Important waterways that run through this federal state are the rivers Rhine, Moselle, Saar, Lahn and Nahe. The UNESCO world cultural heritage „Upper Middle Rhine Valley“ in the north of Koblenz offers many places to visit as well as castles; here you will find at the Rhine the famous Loreley. Rhine Hessian, Ahr, Mittelrhein, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe and the Palatinate are all located in the Rhineland-Palatinate and Germany’s biggest wine-growing areas. Capital is Mainz.
