Who would have guessed? The best kitchen is served in the Hunsrück!
The Hunsrück is situated in the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate between the famous winegrowing areas Moselle, Saar, Nahe and Rhine. It is a low mountain range which has got some nice surprises:
The air in Hunsrück is said to be the purest in Germany and is even certificated by the federal environment office. Friends of history can find here most interesting examples of Celtic-Roman settlements in the archaeology park Belginum in Morbach-Wederath. Beside numerous castles and fortresses, this low mountain range accommodates also the restaurant of famous TV-cook Johann Lafer.
Nature - experience, discover and relax
Extensive forests and meadows, splashing brooks in romantic valleys, moors and peculiar rock formations characterize scenery. The Hunsrück is home to many animal species and plants. Today even rare species like wildcats, badger and kingfisher can be found there. Extensive nature reserves (nature reserve Saar Hunsrück and Soonwald-Nahe) turn nature into an experience. Blossoming canola fields and daffodils meadows colour mountain slopes every spring yellow. In autumn the Hunsrück is a paradise for mushroom friends and in winter for lovers of winter sports.
Tracing Celts and Romans
There are numerous hiking trails which run through spectacular valleys or trace Romans and Celts’ tracks. For instance, you can follow the old Romans’ lane (Römerstrasse) from Bingen to Trier, called Ausonius hiking trail and discover the 2000 years old history of the region. Another activity of interest is cycling on the Celt's footpath starting in Kirn in Naheland, leading over Kirchberg in the Hunsrück and ending in Karden on the Moselle. For families particularly suited is the Schinderhannes cycling track because it is quite flat levelled.
