Bavaria08.11.2013The biggest festival on earth
The biggest festival in the world is more than 200 years old and is visited annually by more than 6 million people. 2013 6.7 million litres of beer were consumed. We have no current information about the number of pork knuckles and roasted chicken, but the amount of them will be close to the consumed litres of beer.
The Oktoberfest is organized annually since 1810, but though it is called “Oktoberfest", it mainly takes place in September. Since for some years now original costumes and brass bands in the foreground - the many guests from all over the world - mainly from Italy, the USA, Japan and Australia - like it.
Since centuries now the arrival of the “Wiesenwirte”, the pub owners of the Oktoberfest, announce the official launch of the festival. Visitors from abroad and also from different parts of Germany love the magnificently decorated horse-drawn carriages and floats of the breweries. After the keg tapping, which is performed by the Mayor follows the call: ”O'zapft is" – and the fun begins!
Visitors from home and abroad alike especially like the costume displays and the traditional shooting clubs with the picturesque outfits. They are organized since 1835 and nowadays about 8,000 persons participate at them, coming from towns and place outside of Munich, but some of them even from Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy and other European Countries.
So don´t miss to visit Munich at the end of September for the “Oktoberfest”. The delicious beer especially brewed for the Oktoberfest with up to 7 percent is even stronger than normal beer, and also the traditional Bavarian dishes are a real treat. Schuhplattler (a dance including rhythmical hitting of shoes and leather pants), whip snapping shows and flag wavers fascinate in the tents of breweries like Spaten, Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu and Lowenbräu.
