The Munich Metropolitan Region is one of eleven metropolitan regions in Germany
Munich’s surroundings offer many holiday and day trip possibilities of different kinds. Dachau is known at home and abroad due to its sad history. The former concentration camp houses today a memorial with lots of information on the Jewish Persecution during the Third Reich. Nevertheless, Dachau is also known for its wonderful Renaissance castle. A trip is as well worthwhile to the old bishop's town of Freising with its cathedral and historical buildings. It is the oldest town in Upper Bavaria. Upper Bavarian cities are the big northern towns like for example Neuburg a.d. Danube, which is characterized by its old town and a river that flows through it. The city is situated within the Danube valley between a scenic hilly Franconian area in the north and the Danube moss and hill country in the south. Significant is also the county town Pfaffenhofen a.d. Ilm and of course Ingolstadt with his modern urban flair.
