Roman Fort Saalburg

The only fully reconstructed Roman Fort world-wide

"Gladiator", the famous movie, created interest for the times of the Romans, as does Asterix in movies and comics for many people for a long time. Additionally, historical novels set in the times of the Roman Emperors enjoy popularity these days.

Roman times can be observed very vividly in the Saalburg, a Roman fort located on the Taunus ridge northwest of Bad Homburg. Easily reachable by federal highway 456, the castle is the most completely reconstructed fort belonging to the Limes Germanicus. Since 2005 it is listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage.

As you arrive at the Saalburg, the massive stone edifices catch the eye as a completely reconstructed site, impressing by its vastness and by its lovely location amidst a forest.

But not only the fort walls and buildings are worth seeing, also the permanent exhibition that shows various objects like tools, weapons, armaments and things used in everyday life can fascinate, making it much easier to imagine how life must have been during the times of the Romans.

An interesting and also very tasty insight into the life of the Romans you can get at the restaurant of Saalburg. The restaurant serves original Roman dishes! Especially children love to eat here, since they can say they’ve eaten like Romans afterwards. But the kitchen is really good, especially the „Roman wine“ which is offered here, is delicious.

Do not forget to stop by the sales store, which is much more than a bare souvenir store. They have excellent and competently well-chosen literature about the Romans and their legacies in Germany and especially in the Taunus.

Facts:

Where Fort Saalburg stands today was once around 90 A.D. a simple, wooden fort for Roman reinforcements. Approximately 50 years later a fort followed for a cohort of regular legionaries. In the second half of the 2nd century a camp and finally a stone fort developed. The cohort, consisting of 500 soldiers, was probably subordinated to a legion in Mogontiacum, today's Mainz. The fort existed until the fall of the Limes around 260 A.D. Afterwards it was used as a stone quarry. Its reconstruction began during the 19th  century.

Excursions:

Saalburg is a gorgeous starting point for a hike to the small fort of Lochmühle. The small fort of Lochmühle is around 3 km away from Saalburg. On the way height increases by 110 metres. The Limes is followed through an area partly much wooded.
