The world oldest Protestant University

Marburg Philipp’s University is very rich in tradition. Founded 1527 by landgrave Philipp, it is worldwide the oldest Protestant university still in use. For nearly 500 years now this classical university teaches in modern style and does important research.

At Marburg Philipp’s University you can find a wide range of courses in the subjects of arts as well as demanding and successful natural sciences. Interdisciplinary cooperation is as important as international networking.

Marburg Philipp’s University has been awarded at the Hessian competition „Excellence in Studies“ for short study times which are reached by an innovative studying model. Especially in tumour and microbiology, infectiology, material sciences, nanotechnology, neurosciences, linguistics, peace research and conflict studies as well as in other scientific and medical fields and arts, the university is very well. In the area of research it is regarded as exceptionally successful.

Marburg attracts students from all over the world, because here new teaching models and contents are developed. Special fields of research, six LOEWE centres and main focuses as well as postgraduate and doctorate schools offer an extremely certified sponsoring of young people through scholarships and prices.

The university town Marburg also scores with a nice Old Town located in an attractive area, a young population (25-30 percent of the population are students) and various cultural attractions. Terms of studying are perfect because university buildings are situated at two locations: Faculty of arts is primarily located in the city centre, while most natural sciences and mathematics are taught on the Lahnbergen a bit outside of town. Furthermore, since two decades are here the university medical centre, Max-Planck's institute of terrestrial microbiology and biomedical research centre located.

Research is substituted by knowledge and technology transfer of supporting societies and cooperation. Making studying possible for the disabled is another focus of Marburg University. In particular the visually impaired are supported, so that Marburg has the highest number of blind students in Germany. A total of 30,744 students are enrolled in winter term 2013/14, 3.049 of them being from other countries.
