Nine of Bavaria’s universities are state facilities while several others are private universities or scientific colleges.

Ludwig Maximilian’s University is one of the leading universities in Europe. It has gotten remarkable archivements in the Excellence Initiative as well as an excellent research balance. At national and international rankings the 500 years old university gets always good grades. Thus, it attracts highly qualified scientists and students both from Germany and other countries. About 700 professors and a scientific staff of 3,600 members teach and do research at 18 faculties.

The university offers a wide range of courses, from arts, law, economics, social sciences to medicine and natural sciences. With over 150 courses and numerous possible combinations LMU offers a broad variation. Currently about 48,000 students, among them 14 percent from abroad, are enrolled at LMU. Studying at LMU means investing into the future and taking a springboard into personal professional career.

LMU’s aim is to develop solution attempts for increasingly getting more complicated future questions regarding people, society, culture, environment and technology. Thus LMU takes its job seriously. The main idea of "universitas" stands also for comprehensive education which encloses social competence as well as critical consciousness of values and history.
