Prior, residence of the principality and later that of the duchy of Dessau-Anhalt and Anhalt, the city is today the third biggest town of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt and one of its regional centres.

Lots of the castles and gardens in and around Dessau-Roßlau are listed as world cultural heritage. Some of them are part of the projects called „Garden Dreams of Saxony-Anhalt“ and „Gardenly world of Dessau-Wörlitz“. Here are the best:
