Bergen auf Rügen
A taste of Hanse times...

Bergen is a town on the island of Rügen. Baltic beaches are only a stone’s throw away!

After reunification, the Old Town of Bergen was costly redeveloped. Historically grown in course of the centuries, the uniqueness of this old town obliged to preserve it.

On a walk through town you will discover a lot of interesting things. Many of the old town houses have facades made of brick stone. Especially fascinating are their old front doors. Some of them are even today still decorated with emblems of sun and sea.

The basilica church of St. Marien is the oldest preserved brick building in Mecklenburg. Particularly its Romanesque forest wall paintings are quite outstanding. A war memorial honours anti fascistic-members of the resistance. A commemorative stone at the town‘s cemetery reminds of all those who were murdered at concentration camp Stutthof.

The town’s museum is located in a building of the former monastery court. On its ground floor the visitor can see remains of Rügen’s primeval and early times. On the upper floor the history of the monastery is displayed.

If you prefer modern attraction to history, then you might love Bergen’s toboggan run. Except Christmas day, the run is open throughout the year. Thus even during hot summer days you can have lots of fun on sledges. The toboggan run is located at the outskirts of Bergen on a forest meadow. 700 metres of run will give you enough speed to rush down to the valley. Free parking area and toilets are located directly next to the toboggan run. For children a playground is available where they will have much of fun.

Snowless fun offers the climbing wall of Bergen, at which you can 365 days a year test your skills. Located close to the open air theatre of Bergen, the climbing wall requests a minimum age of 5 years. Here are cable railways that take you to heights of 1 metre to 20 metres. A special attraction is the Base Jump, where you can jump down from eight metres height. Of course you can also get instructions from trainers while climbing.
