Güstrow
Home of Ernst Barlach

Güstrow is a principal town in the administrative district of Rostock and lies at river Nebel in the heart of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania.

The town’s character is dominated by attractive river and sea scenery as well as the cathedral, parish church and renaissance castle which is reason for the town being nick-named „Paris of the north“.

The adventure trail Altstadtrundweg, a tourist trail through the Old Town, leads past all places of interests. The tour is very interesting because the town has kept its medieval structure with gothic town houses made of brick and half-timbered houses. The classicistic City Hall and renaissance buildings all form together a cultural historical place that is rarely found elsewhere.

Güstrow is closely connected to artist Ernst Barlach, so that his pieces of art are exhibited in three museums. Also the cradle exhibition in the church Heiliggeist is worth seeing.

Recreation can be found in the nature reserve and environmental park where you can observe the local animal world and different biotopes. The Aquatunnel offers you a peek in the world of fishes.

Güstrow lies at the long-distance bicycle trails Berlin-Kopenhagen and Hamburg-Rügen. Also the hiking trail around the city is well developed, as are the bridle paths.

If you prefer swimming, in summer you can visit the outdoor swimming pool of the Island Lake or in the fun pool called Oasis.

Events

In June the Güstrow City Festival takes place. Around the market square will be three days long fun, culture and entertainment. On Sunday the town invites to a pre-lunch drink.

In August a big gourmet's spectacle is staged in Güstrow under the motto „Güstrow cooks“. At the market square you can taste regional kitchen in a lovely atmosphere and enchanting entertainment.
